   The sun sends energy in the form of photons to earth. The photons hit the solar photovoltaic panels and cause electrons to be displaced. The electrons move along connected wires to batteries and are stored in the batteries until used for electrical power.

   The mechanism used to convert solar energy is called a photovoltaic cell.
